Classes of model yachts sailed in Scotland.IOM (International One Metre)The most popular class and sailed word wide. These boats can be transported in most small cars. There are six Scottish clubs that sail competitively at club level, Scottish level, and UK level and in the case of some Scottish skippers at world level.
Six MetreAbout the only other class sailed competitively in Scotland, but mainly in the West and only by a few. There are no real competitions in Scotland. These are large and heavy boats.
LaserWhile this class is sailed in Scotland I don't have a lot of knowledge of it. It is sailed I believe at the Aberdeen and Brechin clubs. It is a one-design class and has to be bought almost ready to sail. It is believed that there was talk of a club for this class being formed at North Berwick.
There are a number of other classes and while there are examples in Scotland there are no competitions that are known of.
North Wind 28 / Victoria
In the Edinburgh area we have fun classes of "North Wind 28s" and "Victorias" which are sailed on Wednesday & Sunday afternoons by a small number of skippers at Inverleith.
Cost of boatsIOM - from £300 second hand to £2,500 for top of the range from people such as "SAILS Etc." This class is tightly controlled i.e. materials, dimensions, weights etc. Boats are checked and registered Nationally.
North Wind 28 and Victoria- boats have to be built from abs kits and a lot of the kit isn't used when the boat is used for racing. Cost of kit approx.£80. Plus radio. Easy to build and great for beginners and is also capable of considerable 'tuning' to significantly improve the performance. See the Links page for local retailers and for information sources for modifications.
